Spatial Experience
Every space communicates. A retail store, an office, a hotel lobby, a showroom — each one sends signals about the brand that occupies it, whether those signals are intentional or not. The most powerful brand experiences are the ones people physically walk through, because the body registers what the mind cannot easily dismiss.
Spatial experience design is the practice of making those signals deliberate. It connects interior architecture, wayfinding, materiality, lighting, signage, and graphic communication into a single cohesive experience, one that a visitor feels before they consciously notice it.
At DesignOccult, we work at the intersection of brand identity and physical space. We bring the brand into the room, giving physical environments the same strategic rigour we apply to any other brand surface.
People forget what they read. They rarely forget how a place made them feel. Spatial design operates at that deeper register — and for brands that want to be remembered, it is one of the most underused tools available.
It depends on the project, but typically covers: brand expression in physical environments, environmental graphics and signage systems, wayfinding design, wall and surface treatments, spatial storytelling, and guidelines for how the brand identity translates into three dimensions. We work in collaboration with interior designers, architects, and fit-out teams rather than replacing them.
As early as possible — ideally before the interior design direction is set. The earlier brand thinking enters the spatial process, the more cohesive the final result. Bringing in brand design at the end of an interior project tends to produce applied graphics rather than an integrated experience.
Yes, and we prefer it. Spatial experience design works best as a collaborative practice. We bring the brand expertise; the interior designers and architects bring the spatial expertise. The best results come from those two disciplines working together from the start.
It is increasingly relevant for offices — particularly for companies that use their physical workspace as a recruitment and culture tool. A well-designed office communicates company values to employees and visitors more effectively than any employee handbook. We have worked on office environments for this exact reason.
Through a spatial brand guidelines system — documentation that translates the brand identity into spatial application rules, material specifications, and design templates that can be implemented consistently across locations, even by different fit-out teams.
